Private David (Day) Adams

David Adams was born on 26 March 1893 at Ballyfatten, Sion Mills, County Tyrone, the last of four children of farmer David Adams and his wife Margaret Jane (née Adams). The family had previously lived in Victoria, Australia, where his two older sisters were born. By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Ballyfatten with his parents and siblings.

Adams enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 22 January 1913 (No.789). He embarked for France with a reinforcement draft for A and C Squadrons on 9 February 1915.

On 19 October 1916 he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (No.50861), serving as an Air Mechanic 2nd Class until 1 April 1918, when he was transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force as a private. On 1 January 1919 he was reclassified as a motor cyclist.

Adams was demobilised and transferred to the RAF's G Reserve on 3 March 1919.

After the war he returned to farming at Ballyfatten. He died on 20 November 1981 and was buried in the Urney Cemetery, Strabane.

David's brother John Adams, a North Irish Horse 'original', also served during the war.
